European high-farming techniques were brought with the pioneers of the New World, and the concept of the home acre was no exception. The home that sat in the middle of these farms had to be functional with good views across the holding. They were also very functional, with plenty of indoor/outdoor interaction as people went between vegetable plots, chicken coops, etc. These days, we have a far more chic interpretation, but the original functions of these homes are still there. The high-pitched roof, large natural light, and simple features that you might expect to resemble locally found products such as field stones.
